My name is Ian Colley and I am a working freelance photographer located on the south side of Brisbane, specialising in Real Estate and Architecture photography, however this blog covers all aspects of my photography including my Sport and Landscape photography and any specials that I might have on photos or gallery prints from recent events.
Mt Cotton Hillclimb 14th April 2013
The MG Car Club of Brisbane held a club point scoring round on Sunday 14th April. So I took the E5 and the 35-100 f2 plus 1.4 tele for a day out. Around 60 competitors lapped the tree lined circuit on a beautiful autumn day. This was the first real drive most of the competitors had run at Mt Cotton this year and a lot of the drivers were taking it fairly cautiously for their early runs. As the day wore on and the temperature got a bit warmer the times got better.
There were no major accidents on the day, a couple of lock-ups and loses at the hairpin and one spin at the top of the first loop on the return run, which slowed proceedings as 4 fence posts had to be replaced.
My plan for the day was to see if I could pan successfully at 1/100th of a sec and still keep the competitors sharp.
I took about 1700 photos for the day (as usual got carried away) and culled those down to about 1000 keepers. The photos from the event can be seen here

This photo is one of my favourite photos of all time and it is from an early outing with my first digital SLR. The Olympus E-330 was my stepping stone into digital SLR's after being a long time Canon film user and then testing digital waters with a great little Nikon Coolpix compact.
The much maligned live view system was the very reason I purchased this more than slightly off beat camera. The unique 2 mode live view is what made this image a lot easier to achieve than without it. Live view A mode, using a second sensor for viewing, allowed me to put the camera right in among the branches, leaves and bees and be able to see what I wanted to focus on. With a typical, for the time, SLR or DSLR I would have had to stick my head in amongst the bees to look through the optical view finder or just stick the camera in and fire away hoping for the best.
I can't believe the camera wasn't more popular when released. Well, I can really, it was a bit expensive and unfortunately old school reviewers couldn't see the benefit of live view back in 2006. These days it's rare not to have live view on a digital SLR. Go figure !

The V8 Jetboats are coming !
The 2013 race season for the AFJSA V8 Jetboats has started with a round already being held in Griffith on the 29th and 30th of March.
The first event for the Tweed Valley Jetsprint Association (Rnd 3) to be held at the Cabarita track is on the weekend of the 15th and 16th of June. It's going to be a good season in the north this year with 3 events at Cabarita and one round scheduled for the Maryborough track. The full race season dates can be seen at the AFJSA website here.
I have finished the framed gallery print, for the 1st round, that I donate to the club for fundraising. This year I have gone for a more modern 'black on black' look rather than the old school walnut timber frame and green mat that I had done previously. I am happy with the finished product although there were no really big crashes last season, everyone behaved ! The bad weather (constant rain both days of the 1st round) slowed the speed of the boats down a lot and very few big mistakes were made during the 2nd round.

Brisbane City Hall re-dedication April 6th 2013
The re-dedication of the Brisbane's City Hall building after 3 years of restoration was held on Saturday 6th April 2013 at 10 am.
The original city hall took 10 years to build and opened on the 8th of April 1930. The clock tower was the tallest structure in Brisbane until the 1960's.
During the reconstruction approximately 2 million man hours were spent restoring the building and more than 5 olympic swimming pools of waste were removed.
The lighting conditions inside the building were quite challenging requiring highish iso and very low shutter speeds to get the images I wanted. The image stabilising system of my E-5 got a huge work out with my hand held shutter speeds dropping down as low as 1/3rd of a second. Pretty much all the images inside the building were taken with my 9-18mm lens.
The interior of City Hall has been restored beautifully and you could spend days taking photos of the architectural features of this impressive building. I'd love to get in there when there wasn't hundreds of people walking around.
